latest technology hits nottingham

While I was in Australia, the theology department at the University of Nottingham moved out of our previous building and into our very own building: Highfield House.  And on the inside of the front door of our new location, this sign can be seen, apparently placed there by the University ‘Security Control’… I think they doubt the ability of theologians to operate such wacky pieces of engineering:

  1. Does that mean you have to stand there and tell the handle about the state of the world today and add on for good measure how plain and ordinary it is compared to other door handles before you will be allowed out? that IS technology – an emotioanally activated door!! :-D

So how many of you theologians are still trapped in there over the weekend then? ;-)

  2. How incredibly complicated. Too many exits. What does depress mean. I think I’ll avoid the department completely to avoid confusion… :-)

  3. I just waited until someone else opened the door and then I pushed them aside and ran out… I do NOT look forward to the day I have to follow those instructions all by myself

  4. I’m still in the department. Any idea how I can get out?

  5. **Shaking fist** Why must you taunt us so, Security Control?? Just dumb down the instructions a little!!

  6. Hi Pete!! Are you THE Pete? Surely out the window and down the fire escape is the sensible solution.

  7. Hi Steph. I’m not sure I can claim to be THE Pete. But I am THAT Pete! If only we had a fire escape…

  8. You are the one and only Pete. Original and unique.

No fire escape?!!!! It’s unsafe. :-)

  9. i always get depressed handles… or depressed around handles… or depressed around signs about depressed handles… i cant remember which

  10. As one lecturer commented: “They expect you to be dumb enough to not know how to use a door, but smart enough to know what the word ‘depress’ means in this context”
