Alien Intertextuality

I feel like I haven’t done a serious theological/bible post in a while, but I’ll get onto that soon.  In the mean time, here are some thoughts I’ve had about intertextuality, in relation to the films Alien and Total Recall.  It’s just over a minute – and I promise you won’t regret it if you check it out…

  1. Someday you’re going to be applying for lectureships, and this video will come up in the interview.

  2. I can imagine the internal discussion by the interviewing committee:

“Well on the negative side, this guy lacks expertise, common sense, and a working knowledge of the English language… but on the positive side, check out this clip I just found on youtube…”

  3. Hopefully the interviewers will only have dial up like me and not be able to watch it unless they sit for maybe an hour and a half and get a frame every few minutes… I did get as far as “Alien – and Total Recall” so I got to hear some good Ozzie drawl which I look forward to hearing in Notts to give colour to all those Nottsites’ greeting you with “Y’arl rart tharn”… :-)

  4. That’s an interesting UK greeting – “you all right?”: The first few times I was greeted in that way it made me worried that I must look sick, or have snot coming out of my nose, or have my fly undone or something. Turns out it just means “how are you?”

  5. I only remember it in Nottingham – they seem to vary greetings across the land … Nottingham’s way is weird – it gave me paranoia – am I too thin? have I got spots? help! We just say hoiya or gideye mite or Kia ora. Notts miss out hello all together I think!

  6. Do you have too much time on your hands????

  7. Just admit it people: it’s hilarious

  8. Whats that old saying about self praise being no recommendation?;-)

I like that you went to the trouble to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. You’re funny.

  9. My humble apologies. Hope I didnt ruin anyone’s thrill. I’m still getting over mine :-P

You know, a big row of XXXXX’s does tend to build more suspense and intrigue. Nicely done.

  10. Steph and Matt – your discussion didn’t use the phrase “Eh up”! What discussion of the lack of use of ‘hello’ in Nottingham is complete with out at least an “Eh up” and preferrably an “Eh up mi duk”?!

  11. A discussion on the intertextuality in Alien without mentioning Spaceballs. How disappointing.

  12. Kia Ora Bec, ‘eh up’ sounds cockney. I never heard it in Notts. I am sure ‘duck’ is Yorkshire – that’s what I was told. I got called duck and heard duck often with no quacks. Maybe it was ‘eh up me duck’ and ‘eh up’ isn’t cockney. I’ve heard the expression “break your duck” (do something for the first time). I think I probably read it in a novel in the days when I still read novels before I went back to university… I though ‘love’ was the typical Notts term of endearment for strangers. I got called ‘love’ by all sorts of people all over West Bridgford (I never strayed far from there). Perhaps expressions are so regional ‘love’ is just West Bridgford! I love ‘love’. :-)

  13. “Well, what have we got here? Will you look at her? Those flashing eyes, those flushed cheeks, those trembling lips. You know something Princess? You are *ugly* when you’re angry.”
    Lone Starr, Spaceballs

  14. I went to see Nottingham Theology Department’s most famous comedy alumnus last night – Paul Kerensa – at his ‘homecoming’ gig. He talked a bit about his degree and asked if there were any theology students in the audience (I was the only one).
You’d have loved the next bit – not only did he ask whether Thiselton was still in the department, he also managed to find a bit of alien intertextuality in Genesis. You know – the bit where Eve comes out of Adam’s chest!

  15. That must be why Adam bust his boobs and men are weird braless creatures.
