Greece-Inspired Cash Giveaway

Tomorrow I’m off to Corinth, Elefsina, and Athens for 8 days, where I’ll be searching out the ancient sites.  Just this morning, I was on the phone to the hotel, engaging in a real live conversation in real live modern Greek… kinda…  Anyway, in the meantime, in order to stop people from forgetting about my blog, I’m doing a CASH GIVEAWAY!!!

Interlocutor: “But Matthew, didn’t you just do a post indicating that money is an idol?  How does that fit with you running a shameless cash giveaway simply to get people to go to your blog?”

Matthew: Shush

Interlocutor: “But I thought you said…”

Matthew: “HUSH!”

Anyway, the cash is in the form of six 2,000 year old Jewish coins, of rather poor quality.  All you have to do to be in with a chance is leave a comment (on any post) while I’m in Greece.  When I return, I shall announce the winner and post them off.  And here’s the cash…

  1. You lucky b… ! I think it’s time I went off somewhere roundabout to dig up ‘Q’. ;-)

  2. Does this include people outside the UK? If so I’m in.
    Jeff

  3. The same as Jeff, if it is the case, I’m also in. I’ve been studying coins with my Classics program (I’m religion and classics). Currently I’m working on a paper concerning the dating of the eruption of Vesuvius, opting for a minority view that Vesuvius erupted later than August 79 CE, based on literary, inscriptional, and numismatic evidences.

At any rate, it would be a delight to own these fine coins, however the condition.

  4. I’m certainly in.

  5. let me know when you need my address!!

  6. You can count me in too!

  7. If you let me win, you can save on the postage – I’ll see you down those dark and dingy corridors of Nottingham in May. :-)

(And I’ll give you ‘Q’ when I dig it up ;-)

  8. Delilah, my cat, would like to enter to. She is of course coming back again to Notts with me and is will possibly become one of the world’s most well travelled cats if she isn’t already. She would like to add these coins to her foreign coin collection. I’ll still give you ‘Q’ if you give Delilah the prize… :-)

  9. Matt, I believe I can make a case that may persuade. Whilst acquring a set of ancient coins would be valuable for me, and continue to enhance my lifelong fascination with all things numismatic, I would DONATE the set to the TRINITY THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE LIBRARY as a permanent gesture of your maginficent benevolence.

  10. I just donated fifteen apple boxes completely full of books – all theology and religions – to the Colenso High School booksale today which they are collecting on Monday … I have to admit I wasn’t planning on giving the coins away immediately but was possibly going to frame them to hang next to my desk. :-)

  11. Well well well… a few bids! Stay tuned – we are in Athens at the moment, & when we return to the UK I’ll work out a winner!

  12. What is the criteria for choosing a winner? Insightful post? Brown nose? Overly corny comment about Q? Random luck of the draw? I feel like I need some special revelation on this one!

  13. overly corny?! Ow.

  14. Well… now that we’re back, this competition is officially closed. I’ll have to work out how the winner will be decided… I’d originally planned to give it to the comment with the most detailed analysis of aorist participles – but that topic was conspicuously avoided, so now I’ll have to think of something else. Won’t be long!

  15. We have a winner… Of the 24 eligible comments, it turns out that John Ottens is victorious. It was a random selection, but people with multiple comments were at an advantage. Comiserations to non-winners… hey – we’re ALL winners in the game of… ummmm… the game of breathing. Congratulations to all :-)

Well done John – I’ll email you for your address.
