New Book on Hermeneutics by Anthony Thiselton

I am back from holidays in the Lake District of England, during which time I visited the Roman sites at Housesteads and Vindolanda – I may post some pics soon… good stuff!  Anyway, while I’ve been away I’ve been doing some proof-reading for a new textbook on hermeneutics by Anthony Thiselton, due to be published by Eerdmans.  It’s good stuff, and I recommend it to anyone teaching a biblical hermeneutics course.  Thiselton practises his theory of hermeneutics in the way he presents his material, inviting readers into the “hermeneutical circle” by whetting their tastebuds with a “premilinary understanding” of the most important theorists and practitioners of biblical hermeneutics – introducing us to their historical situations as well as their main works, before offering assessments.  If you do end up getting the book though, please don’t find any typographical errors on pages 166-265!!!

  1. I was wondering when Thiselton would come up with a introductory hermeneutics book (specifically dealing with philosophical hermeneutics relation to the Bible). I read a review he did of an introduction to theological hermeneutics and he mentioned it was the best available at the time which got me wondering if he knew of something coming down the pipe.

I would really enjoy reading his book especially since I’ve been trying to learn philosophical hermeneutics this last year. I wish he was already coming out with it so I could start reading it now. I’m trying to work through all his stuff on hermeneutics. I’ve only gotten a chapter into his first book.

  2. The book is due to come out this September, so it’s not that far away… in theory. I do find that reading Thiselton on the topic of hermeneutics can be slow-going, but I think that this book will be his most “introductory” so far – in that it aims to be a classroom textbook.

  3. I just saw the listing of it on Amazon and Eerdmans. Unfortunately it looks more like November. Still maybe I’ll hold off on reading his other books. I think the time put into them will be well worth it. I still hope to read his Corinthians commentary at the same time as Fee’s and Hays to get a good feel for all of them, their strengths and their weaknesses. Did you see that book coming out by Jerome Murphy-Oconnor (sp?) I guess it’s a bunch of his writings on Corinthians.

  4. Ah yes I see that it lists a later date on the Eerdmans website – although I had heard that they were hoping to get it out in September for the beginning of the new academic year, so I suppose we’ll see what happens. I have the Murphy-O’Connor book, but haven’t read it through yet – it seems like a worthwhile collection of various essays he’s done on 1 Corinthians. The one or two essays that I’ve properly looked at were helpful. There’s a lot being done on 1 Corinthians at the moment, so I get the impression I’m not going to keep up with it all!
