A hyptothetical question

Imagine a couple are watching a movie (let’s say it’s a romantic comedy).  Each time something predictable happens, the male rolls his eyes and quips, “A familiar topos!”  So here’s what I’m wondering: What do you make of this scenario?

  1. I dont have an opinion on this that you have given a check-box for ;-) but I do wonder if it has caused you to spell the title of this post badly!

  2. hmm…or perhaps you were being clever and rhyming it with the title of your blog and I’M the dummy?

  3. This is a clever experiment in gender politics. You are wondering how many of your readers are able to see things from the point of view of the female, who is likely to be irritated by the repeated quip. (Feel free to delay this comment if it undermines your experiment).

  4. I approve of these interpretations. An alternative reading would be that I can’t spell, and wanted to justify my outrageous movie-watching behaviour to my wife. Speaking of which, the stats speak for themselves – almost 90% of respondents say that they think my practice is worth adopting.

  5. Without some kind of “don’t like it” option/s, your ‘poll’ is like the voting slips of a nation run by a dictator who wants to ‘prove’ his legitimacy!

  6. But unlike that situation, it’s not really possible that anyone would dislike my line, surely!

  7. I’ve been making similar everyday use of the word “topos” ever since I discovered what it meant. You get extra points for using it in the plural, however: “Well, that film covered all of the usual rom-com topoi…”

  8. Heyyyy I’m impressed. Peter said he tried it out on his wife, but it kinda backfired, as he felt the need to explain the term “topos” – and then it turned out that she already understood it. It’s a dangerous game we’re in.

    • Fortunately I typically make this remark while around housemates, rather than girls.
