I’ve just been re-reading Albert Schweitzer’s Quest of the Historical Jesus, and was interested by his passing comments on mythicist views of Jesus:
To be in any way scientific, the mythical theory must not only explain his origin, which is difficult enough, but also show how this fictitious non-Jewish figure was introduced into the Judaism of the early Roman Empire – a hopeless undertaking. Why make him a preacher of the coming of the Kingdom of God, moving entirely within the circle of Jewish thought, and secretly holding himself to be the future Messiah? Why attribute to him unfulfilled predictions of impending persecutions and his own immediate coming as Son of Man upon the clouds of heaven? (xiii)
Schweitzer pronounces the “death-blow to the mythical Jesus”, but adds, “This does not mean, however, that no further attempts will be made to revive the theory.”

I’ve been studying the hypothesis that there was a actual Jesus character since about 1990. It is a very interesting subject. I have worked my way through an interested in the gospel, and am now into the patristic period. thought about the Jewish revolt, James The Just, The Qumran community, and a number of other things on the subject.
I’m always happy to chat with others or share files I have accumulated on the subject, and love to get views from others that have also thought about the topic.
Feel free to contact me, and we can chat.

Hi Rich – I don’t follow the topic closely – but James McGrath has been having some interesting discussions on the topic lately, here – you might be interested in having a look
My response to the old don is here. (It’s a new blog I’ve just started. I won’t be promoting it in comments on others’ blogs except via standard trackbacks and such, but I’m not really up to speed yet and I thought you might be interested in a response from one of those dreaded mythicists.)
Thanks – interesting thoughts; I’ve made a comment there now
