I’m just working through Chrysostom on Hebrews, and gleaning all sorts of gems, as usual. But along the way, this great truism:
For the human race is hard to persuade, and needs much attention, even more than plants. (Homily 12 on Hebrews; 4)
Umm… I mean I know the guy went a bit funny due to his severe asceticism, but I’m curious: did he ever manage to actually convince any plants??

haha. I’m thinking it was the attention that plants required less of than humans… but a funny thought indeed. I had a good chuckle at my desk… but not so loud that people noticed :O
I’m with you Wes, very amusing Matt, but I think the persuasion was to get them to germinate and grow, attention to maintain that state of affairs. Quite pertinent to Hebrews really.
That makes sense… that guy is so well attuned to Scripture. Once again I’m convinced that his pastoral orientation puts him at a significant hermeneutical advantage. He’s aware that we haven’t really heard Scripture until it helps or it hurts…
