Thanks Meredith... as it turns out, my mum & dad babysat the kids last night so we could go out and see Handel's Messiah - so that was a lovely break :-)

We already have a rapture index (Matthew chapter 24) Jesus outlined the things that will culminate in the rapture of the Church (Matthew 24:13)

Our NT department is pretty small but they do offer classes every now and then on other books as well, as I'm looking at their course listings, they also have 'Cultural Setting of Acts' and 'Cultural Setting of the Gospels'... But the last couple years I've been here, I don't recall seeing that actually becoming available.

The prof for the 2 Cor class wrote an article for NTS in 2005 titled 'Urban Uprising in the Roman World: The Social Setting of the Mobbing of Sosthenes'. Maybe you'd be interested in reading that.

Those who place the tearful letter AFTER 1 Corinthians run into all sorts of difficulties when they try to explain Paul's travel plans. But 1 Corinthians was surely not written out of much distress, so it cannot be the tearful letter. A third option needs to be assessed:

Paul received news of an offender in Corinth and wrote the tearful letter and sent it to Corinth with Timothy, who was Titus renamed. While Titus-Timothy was on his way to Corinth Stephanas arrived in Ephesus and brought somewhat better news. Paul then wrote 1 Corinthians and included instructions on the (probably) same offender.

The only counter-argument that I have heard is that 1 Corinthians shows no hint that Paul was worried about a letter that was en-route. However, it is widely agreed that Paul's regret about the tearful letter (2 Cor 7:8) occurred after the return of Titus. Also, Paul's anxiety in the Troad (2 Cor 2:13) occurred after Titus's delay made Paul concerned that something had gone wrong in Corinth. When Paul WROTE the tearful letter he was confident (see 2 Cor 2:3-4; 7:14).

Alex: Yeah that's true about the scholarly consensus - although I imagine the consensus will move... I guess we'll see.

Some would say the 'painful letter' is actually 1 Corinthians, where he instructs them to hand a particular man 'over to Satan'. Others would say that it's a later letter about the development of that same issue. As for me... ummm... dunno!

Mike: a whole class on the cultural setting of 2 Corinthians? I'd love that... Do they have equivalent classes on the other Pauline letters?
