My thoughts are not particularly profound – just that kids love repetition, and that stories are able to communicate theology. My aim with my kids is simply to let them enjoy immersing themselves in a few key narratives:
- Creation of the world and humans
- The passover/exodus/commandments
- Daniel rescued from the lions
- The birth of Jesus
- The good Samaritan
- The trial, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus – awaiting return
Already, 4yo Cara is able to recite most of these stories, and she loves them. Sometimes the same story is requested day after day after day… in fact, I think we had the good Samaritan about 30 days in a row at one point! And I’ve had to accustom myself to that, and realise I can choose either to be bored by this, or to learn from my kids to immerse myself in these formative narratives, and learn who I am by doing so.
