Sometimes a person will use a word in a speech that (unwittingly) marks them out as operating on a higher level of life than me. “Apropos” is one such word. I can’t help but admire a person who uses that word. Another is “segue” – I stand in awe of anyone who uses that word. Another is “manifestly” – close your eyes and imagine someone saying that in a paper: “This is manifestly a later addition” – there, didn’t you feel quiet admiration, even if you disagreed vehemently with the point being made? I hope one day to use words such as these. To those who are already there: I salute you.
