It is being reported at the moment that the BBC is switching from using BC/AD to using BCE/CE, “sparking accusations of political correctness.”
I must say I’m not really that fussed either way. I’m happy using BC/AD, because it does draw attention to the one who changed history. But on the other hand, these designations were never perfect – “BC” was not really “before Christ”; it was just before the incarnation of Christ. And although there’s a sense in which it is now the “year of our Lord” 2011, there’s a sense in which it is not yet the year of our Lord – he awaits the time when he will receive cosmic recognition as Lord.
So if people want to use the terms BCE/CE rather than BC/AD, then I have no problem with that at all. After all, I’d rather have people know the Lord than use his name in vain: “not everyone who says to me, ‘lord, lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my father” (Matthew 7:21).
