I have been asked to participate in a discussion on human sexuality for the Anglican Church here in Perth. I am not Anglican myself, but have taken part in this sort of thing before, alongside another biblical scholar. Here’s how I see the hermeneutical task being applied in this situation:
I am trying to be attentive to the texts – which include, for example, Romans and 1 Corinthians. I am attempting to understand the words in relationship to one another, at various levels.
I am trying to be attentive to the Pauline horizon – which includes, for example, considering the ways in which Paul’s discussion relates to other discussions of his time (e.g. Seneca’s discussion of “passions”)
I am trying to be attentive to our horizon – so, for example, I am considering the weight and value of the theological tradition from which I come; and I am planning to meet later this week with a representative of Perth’s Queer community, in order to hear their perspectives
