Roy Ciampa has given a helpful and very encouraging review of my 2012 book The World of 1 Corinthians in The Expository Times, here. He summarises:
All in all, this is a very valuable source book that will help many readers gain a stronger sense of the culture to which 1 Corinthians was written. The book’s website will further enrich their understanding and serve as a fine resource to enliven their teaching.
That companion website, by the way, is here – and the photos are free to use.
Ciampa also makes a good point that we need to be careful in considering the degree of relevance of background information that comes from elite segments of ancient cultures – given that 1 Corinthians in particular reflects a largely non-elite community (1:26).
